Thorold – The Niagara Sport Commission is pleased to announce that the Niagara Falls Red Raiders and the Niagara Sport Commission have been awarded the Ontario Basketball Association Ontario Cup Host of the Year. This award recognizes outstanding contribution to the sport of basketball in the community and throughout the province and is voted on by Ontario Basketball members.
In 2011 the Niagara Sport Commission and the Niagara Falls Red Raiders co-hosted the Atom U11 and the Juvenile U17 Ontario Cup Championships April 1st to 3rd and May 27th to 29th at sites throughout Niagara Region, including Brock University, Niagara College, Jean Vanier Catholic High School, and Sir Winston Churchill High School.
“On behalf of the Niagara Sport Commission, I am pleased to be accepting this award on November 19th”, said Sue Morin Interim Executive Director of the Niagara Sport Commission. “The NSC staff, volunteers and sponsors worked very hard to make this event happen and are working to make the 2012 events even better,” continued Morin.
The Championships created an economic impact of over $1.2 million with 1,500 athletes, 300 coaches, officials and delegates visiting the Niagara Region.

The award ceremony will take place at the Inaugural Ontario Basketball Awards Gala,scheduled for Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 10:30 AM.
The event will be hosted by Toronto Raptors personality Paul Jones at the Holiday Inn Yorkdale inToronto where more than 50 basketball leaders will be honoured during the ceremony.
About the OBA Ontario Cup
Each year Ontario Basketball organizes and stages the Ontario Cup Provincial Championships, which are open to all member clubs. Teams entered into the Ontario Cup are made up of community “rep” and club team programs. Ontario Basketball offers a competitive playing environment for every community by hosting competitions in various divisions, with division one being the highest level of competition. Each level is offered to males and females athletes in nine age categories. The age categories for the Ontario Cup are as follows for 2012
- Novice U10 (Under 10, Born in 2002 or younger)
- Atom U11 (Under 11, Born in 2001 or younger)
- Major Atom U12 (Under 12, Born in 2000 or younger)
- Bantam U13 (Under 13, Born in 1999 or younger)
